Minnesota Weather and Air Quality Update

Minnesota is bracing for a beautiful day on Wednesday, with high temperatures in the lower 80s in the Twin Cities, according to the latest weather forecasts. However, northern Minnesota may experience less favorable conditions, as the air quality is expected to reach the orange category, which means it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Despite some improvement from earlier in the month, an air quality alert remains in effect for northeast Minnesota through Wednesday evening. This alert is a result of localized issues, as heavy wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires caused several days of unhealthy air quality ("red" AQI) earlier this month, particularly affecting central and northern Minnesota as well as the Twin Cities.

The good news is that winds are expected to shift and help gradually clear the smoke from west to east by Tuesday, August 12. In the meantime, the day is expected to have blue skies in Minnesota, with the exception of northern Minnesota.

Regarding the weather, temperatures have been unseasonably pleasant, with highs in the 70s and low humidity as of early August. Surface high pressure dominated the region through Friday evening, causing light winds and poor smoke dispersion. However, winds are expected to increase from the south over the weekend, helping to gradually clear the smoke.

Patchy morning fog and cool nights in the 50s have been noted, with only limited rain chances expected early next week in far western Minnesota. No significant rain or flood risk was mentioned explicitly for the Twin Cities or the weekend period within the available data.

It's important to note that there are weak systems expected to pass west of Minnesota early next week with low rain chances. Increased humidity and a chance of rain are forecast by the end of the following week, but no immediate flooding concerns are apparent.

If you need the very latest updates for this weekend’s weather or any rapid changes in air quality or flood risk, checking the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and local National Weather Service sites closer to the time is recommended. The air quality alert in northern Minnesota will be in effect until 11 p.m.
