Per reports from Russian media outlets, North Korea is gearing up to send a significant number of workers and mine-clearing soldiers to aid in the reconstruction of the Kursk region. Reportedly, this aid will consist of 5,000 workers and 1,000 mine-clearing soldiers, as mentioned by Russian Security Council secretary, Sergei Shoigu, during a recent visit to Pyongyang.

Historically, the Kursk region, which adjoins Ukraine, was partially invaded by Ukrainian troops from summer 2024 to spring 2025, following an offensive launched by the Ukrainian army in August 2024. A battle ensued between Ukrainian units and a joint force of North Korean and Russian soldiers, ultimately resulting in the retreat of the Ukrainian troops.

In an ongoing show of solidarity, North Korea is reportedly sending more troops to help build and clear landmines in the Kursk region. This further strengthens the bond between these two nations as they both disregard international sanctions and align more closely. Analysts speculate that these engineering and construction units may pave the way for even further North Korean involvement in the region, potentially leading to direct support for military operations.
