US Proposes 'Golden Dome' Missile Defense System, Stoking International Concerns

The United States has unveiled plans for the 'Golden Dome' missile defense system, aiming to protect the country from a range of airborne threats, including ballistic and hypersonic missiles, advanced cruise missiles, and drones. Critics, including Russia and China, view this initiative as a potential threat to the principle of nuclear deterrence and a contributor to global tensions. North Korea has also expressed opposition, accusing the US of intentionally militarizing space.

According to reports from the KCNA news agency, North Korea's Foreign Ministry has sharply criticized the proposed system. A memorandum published by the ministry described the 'Golden Dome' as a "dangerous 'threatening initiative'" that poses a threat to the strategic security of nuclear-armed states. The document accuses the US of seeking to militarize space.

The memorandum further explains that the US plan is the "main cause of the outbreak of a global nuclear and space-based arms race." This escalation, it claims, would heighten "security concerns of nuclear-armed states" and transform space into a potential battleground for nuclear wars.

US President Trump announced further details about the project last week at the White House. He emphasized the importance of the system for the success and survival of the country, stating that once completed in three years, the defense shield would be capable of intercepting missiles, regardless of their launch location, including from space.

This proposal has triggered concerns among China and Russia, which have historically been wary of US missile defense systems. Beijing has previously accused the US government of threatening the global strategic balance, urging Trump to abandon the project. Expert analysis suggests that, given its nuclear weapons capabilities, North Korea also possesses such weapons.

The 'Golden Dome' system includes several key components. It is designed to counter ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles, as well as next-generation aerial attacks. It will deploy space-based sensors and interceptors, such as Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensors, proliferated space-based interceptors for boost-phase intercepts, and terminal-phase intercept capabilities.

The system also consists of a secure supply chain for all components and preemptive strike capabilities to defeat missile attacks prior to launch. Additionally, non-kinetic means will be integrated to augment kinetic attacks.

However, North Korea, China, and Russia have yet to release official statements specifically addressing the 'Golden Dome' system. Their concerns can be inferred from geopolitical contexts and typical responses to US missile defense initiatives. These countries might view the 'Golden Dome' as a means to undermine their strategic deterrence capabilities, alter the strategic nuclear balance, and potentially escalate tensions, leading to an arms race as each nation seeks to counter US advancements with their own military technologies.
