Fired Up: North Korea's Short-Range Ballistic Missile Tests

In a bold move yesterday, North Korea hurled what seemed to be several short-range ballistic missiles from its east coast, according to South Korea's military report. The launch could be an attempt to gauge the efficiency of these projectiles destined for foreign buyers.

The missiles were blasted off from Wonsan around 8:10 am, soaring up to 800 kilometers before plunging into the sea, as per the military's statement. South Korea is maintaining open lines of communication with the U.S. and Japan, sharing valuable intel about the incident.

The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the three nations' nuclear negotiators convened by phone to denounce the launch as a violation of UN sanctions. South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Lee Sung-jun remained tight-lipped about the specifics, such as the number of missiles or their exact characteristics. however, he suggested the launch might be a performance test for export-ready missiles.

North Korea analyst Hong Min, from the Korea Institute for National Unification, hypothesized that the tested missiles could be two types previously supplied to Russia, used in their attacks on Ukraine. Hong believes that additional testing could have been needed to address reported durability and precision issues in the battlefield.

Japan also reported the detection of a North Korean ballistic missile, which may have flown on an unconventional trajectory.

The missile launch transpired approximately a week after leader Kim Jong-un observed a test-fire of a new weapons system. On the last month of April, Pyongyang revealed the 5,000-tonne destroyer-class vessel Choe Hyon, boasting about its "most powerful weapons." Some experts claimed the ship was equipped with short-range tactical nuclear missiles, although North Korea has not yet proven the capacity to miniaturize its nuclear arsenal. The South Korean military suspects the destroyer may have been developed with Russian assistance—possibly in exchange for North Korea's deployments of troops to aid Moscow in its conflict with Kyiv.

Enrichment Data:

The short-range ballistic missiles launched by North Korea on May 8, 2025, were likely a KN-23 short-range ballistic missile and large-caliber rocket artillery systems. The tests might have been aimed at evaluating the capabilities of armaments destined for foreign buyers, including potentially Russia, for use in their conflict in Ukraine. The international community, including the U.S. and South Korean intelligence agencies, has expressed concerns about the ongoing military actions in the region and their potential threat to peace and stability.
