North implements a massive 10-million line project for establishing archaeological pillars

Spicing Up the Cultural Landscape of Northern Portugal

Good news for the northern region of Portugal! The Regional Action Plan for Culture, as announced by the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N), includes funding for two significant projects: the Archaeological Poles Network and the Regional Network of Creation Centers.

The funding amounts to a whopping 9.6 million euros, with 4.8 million euros each allocated for the Archaeological Poles Network and the Regional Network of Creation Centers.

The Archaeological Poles Network aims to take a proactive step in preserving and showcasing the regional and national archaeological heritage. By equipping each NUT III with a recognized archaeological pole, the North will boast the first region-wide archaeological poles network in the country.

CCDR-N notes the surge in preventive archaeological activity over the past two decades, leading to a trove of archaeological artifacts yet to be thoroughly explored and exhibited. The funding will pave the way for a long-awaited comprehensive preservation and enhancement of the region's heritage.

Jorge Sobrado, CCDR-N's vice-president for Culture, explains that the funding will ensure suitable conditions for storing, cataloging, and accessing archaeological artifacts, encouraging research and outreach efforts.

On the other hand, the Regional Network of Creation Centers seeks to foster a regional network of creative hubs in the North, promoting the development and refinement of regional creative and artistic ecosystems. The network aims to provide space for individual and collective creators across various disciplines like performing arts, music, photography, and more.

Jorge Sobrado highlights that this investment addresses a crucial gap in the development of northern Portugal's creative ecosystems – the absence of dedicated, equipped spaces for continuous creative activities. This, he adds, is done with a focus on territorial cohesion.

Objectives for both networks include: creating equipped spaces for artistic creation, establishing residences for developing creation and training activities, promoting regional creative industries, and fostering a consistent cultural agenda.

Applications can be submitted until September 5th, with a maximum co-financing rate of 80% for both funding lines.
