Norris Outpaces Verstappen as the Swiftest Driver
In the heart of Baku, the qualifying session for the 2025 Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix took place on September 21, 2025, under windy conditions. The session, held on an approximately 6-kilometer track, determined the starting grid for Sunday's race.
Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, put in a strong performance in his Red Bull car, securing a second-place position, just 0.222 seconds slower than Lando Norris.
Norris, a 25-year-old British racing driver and World Championship contender, achieved the pole position in his McLaren car, setting the fastest lap of the qualifying session. This impressive feat marks Norris's first pole position of the season.
Meanwhile, the 24-year-old Australian, Oscar Piastri, led the pack, holding onto his position as the leader of the World Championship standings. Piastri's McLaren teammate, Norris, is close behind in second place.
Piastri, who has 31 points in the World Championship standings, will be aiming to extend his lead in Sunday's Grand Prix.
Nico Hülkenberg, the only German driver in the field, finished twelfth in the qualifying session. Charles Leclerc, Hamilton's Ferrari teammate, came in tenth. Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, finished fourth.
The decision on the starting positions for Sunday's Grand Prix will be made today at 14:00 CEST. The qualifying session was affected by wind gusts of up to 30 km/h, potentially adding an extra layer of challenge to the race weekend.
As the dust settles on the qualifying session, all eyes will be on Sunday's Grand Prix as the drivers battle it out for position in the heart of Baku.
