Norris dominates Baku debut, Piastri encounters difficulties
Azerbaijan Grand Prix Practice Sessions Recap
The practice sessions for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix have concluded, offering a glimpse into the upcoming race weekend. Here's a recap of the key events.
In the first practice session, Lando Norris of McLaren set the fastest time, securing a strong start to the weekend. Max Verstappen, starting from seventh in Red Bull, managed to improve his position to sixth by the end of the session. Carlos Sainz Jr., driving for Ferrari, also made notable progress, moving from fourth to third place.
However, Oscar Piastri from McLaren, the current leading driver in the Formula 1 World Championship with 324 points, encountered technical issues with his car during the first practice session. Despite these setbacks, he managed to improve his position significantly in the second practice, finishing in second place, albeit over three tenths of a second behind Norris.
Charles Leclerc, who has secured pole position in Azerbaijan in each of the past four years but has never won the race, finished third in the second practice session. His strong performance continued as he secured the third fastest time in the session.
Sergio Perez, Verstappen's teammate at Red Bull, also showed improvement, moving from 11th to fifth place in the second practice session. The McLaren team showed consistency, with Daniel Ricciardo finishing the second practice session in eighth place.
George Russell, driving for Mercedes, finished the second practice session in ninth place, slightly behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton who finished in seventh. Nico Hülkenberg maintained his position, finishing the second practice session in 12th place in the Sauber.
The practice sessions were briefly interrupted for work on the kerbs, a common occurrence in Formula 1. The second practice session also experienced a similar interruption.
It's important to note that Verstappen is 94 points behind Piastri in the championship, with Norris in second place, just 25 points behind the leader. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualification will be crucial for determining the starting grid, and the race itself promises to be an exciting battle.
