Nordstrom sales suffer significant drop under Ivanka Trump's watch
In a move that has sparked controversy, high-end retailer Nordstrom has announced it will no longer carry Ivanka Trump's apparel. The decision, made this week, comes after a significant drop in sales for the brand.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, sales of Ivanka Trump's products were more than 70 percent lower in the second, third, and fourth week of October compared to the same weeks the previous year. This sales decline occurred weeks before Donald Trump was elected president, on Nov. 8, as per the report.
The sales drops were so significant that they led to Nordstrom's decision to stop carrying Ivanka Trump's line. The retailer's sales for the brand decreased from $20.9 million to $14.3 million in the past fiscal year, representing a near one-third fall.
The news has led to a response from President Trump, who took to Twitter to defend his daughter. In a tweet made on Wednesday, he accused Nordstrom of treating his daughter 'so unfairly.'
The sales decline has also resulted in controversy surrounding Kellyanne Conway, a senior White House adviser. Conway was accused of violating ethics rules by urging people to buy Ivanka Trump's products on television. This was seen as a 'free commercial' for the brand.
In response, Republican Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House of Representatives Oversight committee, requested a review of Conway's comments by the Office of Government Ethics and potential disciplinary action if warranted. The Office of Government Ethics was also asked to recommend disciplinary action against Conway.
Tara Darrow, Nordstrom spokeswoman, stated that the retailer did not provide sales data for Ivanka Trump's line to The Wall Street Journal. She also mentioned that Nordstrom does not disclose specific sales results for any brand.
Despite Nordstrom's decision, it is unclear whether other companies that previously sold Ivanka Trump's brand will also stop carrying her line. As of now, no information has been provided about other companies' plans.
The report cited internal Nordstrom data as the source of this information. The Wall Street Journal is the source of this news article.
