Nordic Films Announce Expanded Pitch Slate, with Benjamin Ree, Baldvin Z, Antti J. Jokinen, and Linda Hambäck Leading the Way as Complete Lineup Unveiled
The 31st edition of New Nordic Films, taking place from August 19-22, 2025, in Haugesund, Norway, is set to showcase 21 films in development at the Nordic Co-Production Market (NCPM). This year's event promises to be a hub for Nordic and Baltic cinema excellence, featuring a diverse range of projects from some of the most exciting filmmakers in the region.
Among the notable upcoming projects to be pitched are:
- "The Greatest Illusion" by Benjamin Ree, a Primetime Emmy and Sundance-winning documentary filmmaker, exploring the life of illusionist Alexx Alexxander through archival footage and family videos, addressing themes of trauma, memory, crime, and redemption.
- "Quiet Lake" by Bulgarian-Finnish filmmaker Tonislav Hristov, a drama about fitting in.
- "On a Scale of One to Ten" by Icelandic director Ninna Palmadóttir, known for her film Solitude (Toronto Discovery, 2023), produced by UK-based Lushkin Films.
- "Abyss" by Finnish director Aino Suni (Heartbeast), a gripping drama about a complex romantic relationship, produced by the Finnish high-profile company Aaamu Film.
- "Wannabe" by Danish filmmaker Patricia Bbaale Bandak, a project pitched earlier at the Nordic Film Market in Gothenburg and produced by Monolit.
The 2025 NCPM also highlights six promising Baltic projects aiming to foster collaboration between Nordic and Baltic film industries.
Notable filmmakers involved include Benjamin Ree (Norway), Aino Suni (Finland), Ninna Palmadóttir (Iceland), Tonislav Hristov (Bulgarian-Finnish), and Patricia Bbaale Bandak (Denmark). Additionally, Swedish director Måns Månsson is among the noteworthy talents presenting new work.
The event accompanies the unveiling of the 2025 Nordic Council Film Prize nominees and will feature screenings across Nordic countries, reinforcing New Nordic Films' role as a platform for Nordic and Baltic cinema excellence.
Over 250 delegates have signed up for New Nordic Films, including sales outlets like The Coproduction Office, Le Pacte, Beta Cinema, and The Playmaker, programmers from Sundance, Tribeca, Rome to Karlovy Vary, and top buyers including Netflix and HBO Max.
Panels at this year's event will focus on Nordic Indigenous Cinema, Baltic-Nordic co-productions, Nordic animation, marketing, distribution, and a focus on two successful Nordic features: "Loveable" and "Dreams."
New Nordic Films will also feature a new initiative, with 10 producer members of the European Film Club on hand in Haugesund.
