"Nordhorn Bikepark receives official sanction"
In the heart of the Gewerbe- und Industriepark GIP, nestled next to the "Rodelberg," the much-anticipated Bikepark Nordhorn has officially opened its gates. This large Dirt Park facility, realised with a significant investment of around 160,000 euros, has been a collaborative effort between the city administration, expert companies, and an engaged group of young BMX riders from various Nordhorn districts.
The idea for the Bikepark Nordhorn was first presented by an unspecified individual, and it quickly gained momentum among the city's youth. In the fall of 2024, Mayor Thomas Berling approached a group of young cyclists on the town hall square, sparking a conversation that would lead to the development of the Bikepark. A meeting at the town hall followed, where over 20 youth presented their idea along with a sketch, marking the beginning of a project that would capture the imagination of the cycling community.
The Bikepark Nordhorn boasts three distinct zones: the Pumptrack, suitable for beginners; the Table Line, offering jumps for advanced riders; and the Dirt Line, designed for experienced cyclists. In addition to the thrilling rides, the park's slopes will be planted and seating areas set up, with the youth of Nordhorn playing a significant role in these efforts.
The construction of the Bikepark began in August 2025 and was completed in just a few weeks, thanks to the close cooperation between all parties involved. The funding for the project came from the European Union's European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), with the city of Nordhorn receiving around 60,000 euros under the LEADER program. Martina Cordes from the Amt für regionale Landesentwicklung Weser-Ems, Inga Groenke, and Kathrin Schmedt from the LEADER region Grafschaft Bentheim were instrumental in the funding and cooperation for the Bikepark Nordhorn.
The Bikepark Nordhorn is open to the public, but certain behavioural rules must be followed for safety and to prevent damage. These rules include the exclusive use of mountain bikes and BMX bicycles, a minimum age of 8, wearing protective gear, and not using the facility in snow, ice, or wet conditions. A planting action with the BUND is also planned.
As the Bikepark Nordhorn continues to attract cyclists from across the region, it stands as a testament to the power of community engagement and collaboration. The park's success underscores the importance of listening to the voices of the youth and fostering an environment where their ideas can take root and flourish.
