Nonsense or useful? How to wear winter jackets correctly, according to TikTok
A long-standing debate about winter hoods has resurfaced online, this time over the best way to wear fur-lined trims. A TikTok user recently claimed that tucking the fur inside the hood keeps you warmer, sparking discussions across social media. The question of how to maximise warmth in freezing conditions isn’t new—but opinions remain divided.
Indigenous Inuit communities have long relied on fur-trimmed hoods to shield against harsh Arctic winds. Their traditional knowledge confirms that fur lining reduces heat loss by disrupting cold airflow. The natural variation in fur thickness and hair length creates a barrier at different wind angles, improving insulation.
A 2004 U.S. study, however, questioned the idea that tucking fur inward makes a noticeable difference. Despite this, fitness influencer Jessica Alzamora posted a video on December 14, 2022, arguing that inward-facing fur blocks wind more effectively. Her explanation reignited the debate, with many users testing the method themselves. Modern winter jackets often include fur-lined hoods for this very reason. Without fur, heat escapes quickly through the face, leaving wearers exposed to wind friction. Yet, while natural fur outperforms synthetic alternatives in insulation, no credible research explains why tucking it inward would be superior. The claim about ‘natural food in headwear’ storing heat better—circulating in some discussions—appears baseless and unrelated to the actual science of insulation.
The debate over fur placement continues, with traditional wisdom and anecdotal advice clashing against limited scientific backing. For now, a well-insulated hood—regardless of fur direction—remains essential for staying warm in freezing, windy, or wet conditions. The best protection still depends on the quality of the jacket and its design.
