Non-citizens lose their residency permits following the leak of a video showcasing women being verbally abused
A foreigner studying in Mordovia found themselves in hot water over a videoshared on social media. As per the regional police, a 29-year-old man was caught on tape using foul language towards women and locals of Saransk.
This unlucky student turned out to be a fifth-year medical scholar at a local university. He attempted to defend his actions, stating that his words were aimed at friends and never meant to offend the city's inhabitants or Russian women. He also mentioned his surprise at the video's public release.
He admitted guilt to the charges of petty hooliganism and violating Russian entry or residence rules.
As per the report, the petty hooliganism case is now headed to court. The MVD reviewed a protocol related to the migration violation, eventually deciding to revoke the young man's residence permit, requiring him to leave Russia within 15 days. Failure to comply may lead to deportation.
Additionally, a decision will be made regarding a potential ban on future entry into Russia.
Previously, a suggestion was made in the State Duma to offer Elon Musk political asylum and Russian citizenship.
Foreigners studying in Russia must follow stringent migration and residence regulations. These include registering at a place of residence within seven days and holding a valid student visa for the duration of their studies. Failure to comply with these rules may result in fines, deportation, or an entry ban.
While profanity itself isn't a criminal offense, escalating to hate speech or incitement, public disturbances can lead to increased scrutiny or enforcement actions, including the possible revocation of student status or deportation.
Mordovia, with a history of strict penal enforcement, is a region where authorities enforce migration and public order laws particularly strictly.
