Non-believers scrutinizing the Pope

From the Schmoll Corner: Staring at the Pope with Unbelievers

By Thomas Schmoll

What a spectacle! Over four rounds of voting in two days, the new Pope Leo XIV took the crown - even a Catholic like Friedrich Merz, managed two rounds in a single day. Thanks to the atheistic Left Party, ecumenism in the Bundestag is now a reality. Progress is palpable.

Admit it, I wouldn't normally tune in to watch TV, but I find it a handy distraction while chowing down. Alas, the majority of programs deliver a less-than-satisfying dose of triviality, with their lowbrow, dumbed-down approach to humanity.

The show that really gave me the creeps was "Brisant." Right from the get-go, I heard about the smoke coming from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, all while being fed "live images" of the smokestack against the big, blue sky. Little did I know that the Church's election process was underway, with Germany seemingly captivated by the unfolding spectacle.

"Live images" of a smokestack adorning a roof - it's no divine miracle that we're all so perplexed by the reporting. Yet, I couldn't help but imagine myself being a part of the election, strolling through the Sistine Chapel, marveling at Michelangelo's genius frescoes without the constant yelling of "no fotto." Alas, I have no intentions of becoming a cardinal.

It's puzzling how this election, with no significance for the majority of us Germans, can still pique so much excitement. But then, it's typically the case that people hardly know who it is they're electing. After the election, the same old interpretation game begins, as everyone tries to figure out what it all means.

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost in Chicago, is a historical figure - not least because he is the first American to ever lead the Catholic Church in its nearly 2,000 years of existence[4]. This mark of his American heritage represents an evolution in the Church's demographic and cultural centers, further emphasizing the Church's growing influence in the United States[3].

Though originally from Chi-town, Leo XIV has a US voting record that demonstrates his independence from partisan politics, despite his American roots[2]. Some might say his election breaks centuries-old traditions and symbolizes a new era for the Catholic Church.

His relatively youthful age compared to recent popes promises a long and dynamic papacy, with fresh perspectives and energy. This new era got off to a good start when Pope Leo XIV called out to his people, "Peace be with you all, dear brothers and sisters," and emphasized the need for peace, especially during these turbulent times.

While the world welcomes a fresh face, questions remain about the pontiff's future impact and potential for change. Only time will tell if he will leave his mark on the Church and global relations. For now, we can appreciate the significance of his election and the exciting journey ahead, even if the impressionable masses might be getting carried away.
