Nominees for NOAA and the State Department receive committee endorsements
Democrats Vote in Favour of Neil Jacobs' Confirmation as NOAA Leader
In a bipartisan move, Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and several other Democratic senators have voted in favour of President Donald Trump's nominee, Neil Jacobs, to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Neil Jacobs, a climatologist and former acting administrator of NOAA, received a vote of 20-8 in favour of his confirmation from the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. This vote was a repeat, as it occurred due to the return of several nominees by Republican leaders who had already been forwarded to the full Senate due to procedural concerns with proxy or voice votes.
The vote for Jacobs' confirmation took place on Wednesday, and it was not a voice vote or a proxy vote, despite earlier procedural concerns. The vote was unanimous among the mentioned Democrats, including Senators Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Jacky Rosen of Nevada, and Brian Schatz of Hawaii.
The Democrats' support for Jacobs' confirmation does not alter the fact that his confirmation vote was unusual due to procedural concerns with earlier votes. It also does not necessarily mean they have ceased their increased scrutiny of Trump's nominees, a move that followed the GOP's decision to change the chamber's confirmation rules.
Under the new rules, the en-bloc approval of numerous lower-level agency nominees is now possible. However, the Democrats' support for Jacobs does not indicate a change in the Republican stance on his nomination.
The confirmation vote for Jacobs brings him closer to being confirmed as the head of NOAA by the full Senate with the support of these Democratic senators. This confirmation would be a significant step for Jacobs, who has been awaiting reconfirmation by the Senate after being nominated by President Trump.
