Nominations for the GRAMMY Awards in 2024 Announced
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music has once again proven its musical prowess, with faculty and alumni receiving a total of 20 GRAMMY nominations across various categories this year.
Chloe Vaught and Kelci Hahn, proud alumni of UCLA, lent their voices to the Los Angeles Philharmonic's recording of Gabriela Ortiz's Revolución Diamantina, which has been nominated in four categories. The album Alma, featuring Regina Carter, a professor at The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, has also been recognised, earning a nomination in the category of Best Arrangement, Instrument and Vocals.
Thirteen faculty members were nominated across eleven categories, with notable mentions going to Boris Allakhverdyan, Chris Hanulik, Ben Hong, Varty Manouelian, James Miller, Jan Berry Baker, and David Riccobono, who are either faculty members or alumni of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and play with the LA Philharmonic.
In the world of contemporary classical music, Valerie Coleman's "Revelry," recorded on Decoda's self-titled debut album, has received a nomination in the category of Best Contemporary Classical Composition. Catherine Gregory and David Kaplan, UCLA faculty members, perform with Decoda.
The Experiential Orchestra, with Catherine Gregory as the principal flute, has earned two GRAMMY nominations. Nicole Cohen, an alum of the school, is recognised in the nomination of Lalah Hathaway's VANTABLACK in the category of Best R&B Album.
Faculty member Amy Kuney co-wrote the song "Red Wine Supernova" on Chappell Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, which is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. Ryan Svendsen, another faculty member, performed trumpet on Beyoncé's "16 Carriages" from Cowboy Carter, which is nominated for Best Country Solo Performance.
