Camille Pissarro, a highly talented French racehorse, has had his promising career tragically cut short due to a fetlock injury. The colt, trained by Aidan O'Brien and owned by MV Magnier and White Birch Farm, was purchased for 1.25 million guineas at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
During his short but successful career, Camille Pissarro showcased his top-class ability, winning a total of £1,138,646 in prize-money across his 11 starts. His key achievements include winning the prestigious Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (G1) as a two-year-old and the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby, G1) at Chantilly, where he made a decisive late move riding under Ryan Moore.
Camille Pissarro also placed third in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (G1) and finished fourth in the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown. However, it was during the Coral-Eclipse that he suffered a setback. Pulling a shoe, he subsequently sustained a fissure fracture in his fetlock, leading to his retirement in August 2025.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien praised the colt, describing him as an "extremely classy colt" who combined speed and quality. Plans for his next stage, likely a stud career, will be announced later.
Meanwhile, another horse from Ballydoyle, Storm Boy, is heading back to Australia to stand for A$16,500 after retirement. Diego Velazquez, purchased by Sam Sangster Bloodstock, will stand at the National Stud next year.
In summary, Camille Pissarro was a standout French Derby winner renowned for his Group 1 winning form, speed, and class. His progression was unfortunately halted by injury, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on in the racing world.
