Revised Article:

In a worrying turn of events, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, detained in Iran since May 2022 on bogus "espionage" charges, have been silent for three weeks now, leaving their families in despair. After their last contact on May 30 and the recent scuffles between Israel and Iran, they are gripped by fear, according to Noémie Kohler, Cécile's sister, on June 18.

"We've not heard a peep since May 30, not a sign of life from Jacques and Cécile, and the French authorities can't peel any info either," Noémie Kohler stated, adding that the anxiety has intensified since the skirmishes between the Israeli army and Iran from June 13. "We saw that at least two skirmishes took place roughly 2 kilometers from where they're confined, so it's awfully close. We can only imagine they'd have heard the booms, but we got no clue on their condition, no clue if the prison's conditions have worsened given the circumstances, we're completely in the dark and we're fucking terrified!", she admitted.

The Israeli army claimed it aimed to deter Tehran from acquiring an atomic bomb with these skirmishes. Iran retaliated by vowing to batter Israel relentlessly until the attacks ceased.

"Fear of imminent death"

"What we urge from the French authorities is that they swing their diplomatic weight to halt these skirmishes," Noémie Kohler explained, advocating for a humanitarian rescue mission for her sister and Jacques Paris because "they're staring at imminent death if nothing's done"

Labeled as "state hostages" by the French authorities, they're languishing in brutal conditions, in isolation, within the Evin prison in Tehran. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, thus specified before the Senate that he'd "dispatched messages to the Iranian and Israeli authorities warning them of the presence of our two compatriots in Evin prison and the compulsory need, regarding the Iranian authorities, to release them promptly to ensure their safety".

Interview

Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, imprisoned for three years in Iran: "The only thing keeping them from drowning is knowing we haven't forgotten them"The final telephone conversation took place on May 28, when Cécile Kohler's parents chatted with her. "The news was already grim at the time because they're at breaking point, they're despondent, they no longer trust in their release, and the Iranian authorities keep them in a state of psychological torture that's fucking awful by announcing an extremely harsh and imminent verdict that never materializes, so they always have this damn threat looming over their heads", Noémie Kohler revealed. Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris are officially the last two French detainees in Iran. Olivier Grondeau, who'd been detained since October 2022, was released in March.
