Prominent Palestinian Footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid Killed by Israeli Forces

In a shocking turn of events, Suleiman Al-Obeid, a well-respected figure in Palestinian football, was killed on August 6, 2025, by an Israeli tank shell while waiting in a crowd for a feeding station to open in Gaza.

Al-Obeid, who made 24 appearances for the Palestine national football team and scored twice, was wounded by shrapnel and died en route to the hospital. Two of his nephews were also injured in the incident.

Initially, Israeli authorities denied any record of an incident involving Al-Obeid. However, after further scrutiny, their official position was that "no casualties were reported as a result of IDF tank fire in the area" where he died. This denial has been contested by foreign organizations and has drawn criticism, as many see it as a repeat of previous denials regarding Palestinian civilian casualties by Israeli forces.

Al-Obeid was a leading figure in Palestinian soccer and an inspirational figure for many in Gaza. His death has reverberated beyond Gaza into English and European soccer leagues.

Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian footballer who plays for Liverpool FC, questioned the circumstances surrounding Al-Obeid's death on social media, which sparked widespread reactions and global media attention. Doaa Al-Obeid, the wife of Suleiman Al-Obeid, responded to Salah's tweet, urging him to engage with FIFA and UEFA to raise global awareness about the circumstances surrounding her husband's death. She also appealed to Salah to advocate for the rights of Suleiman, his family, and his children, and to help relocate Suleiman's children out of Gaza so they can live in a safe environment with access to medical and educational services.

As of the latest information on August 19, 2025, no new official investigation outcomes or Israeli admissions regarding the incident have been reported. The circumstances remain contentious with ongoing protests against the Israeli denial of responsibility.

Meanwhile, in other news, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in Balikesir province, Turkey, on August 8, 2025, and was felt in Istanbul.
