Pistorius' Stand on Israel-Iran Conflict: "We Aren't Involved"

No plans, no actions in progress here.

In a candid interview with ARD, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius clarified that Germany isn't backing Israel in its conflict with Iran. "Nope, we aren't involved," Pistorius stated. "No requests, no preparation."

The SPD leader further added, " frankly speaking, I've no idea how we could actively wade into this skirmish. So, it's not even on our agenda."

Germany's stance contrasts with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statement, who had disclosed Israel had requested fire extinguishers from the German government. Merz quickly responded, "we'll jump on it right away."

Lars Klingbeil, Vice Chancellor, shared a different perspective. He could hardly envision a scenario where Germany would hesitate to support Israel, particularly in the event of a threat to its existence. However, he also believed it was crucial to evaluate whether Israel's attacks on Iran comply with international law. A clear assessment hasn't been made yet.

Pistorius underscored his understanding for Israel's defensive actions. "The Israelis undoubtedly have a right to protect themselves," he said. Iran, with its open goal of annihilating Israel, maintains proxy forces like the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon to achieve this objective. "It's crystal clear where the danger originates," Pistorius pointed out.

Emmanuel Macron, the French President, had pledged support to Israel if it faced retaliation from Iran. Yet, it's important to note that speculation about Bundeswehr backing Israel's military abruptly ended as the German Ministry of Defense clarified it was merely a flight of a German military aircraft from Jordan to Iraq – nothing more, nothing less.

Germany, like France and the UK, has a history of supporting Israel's right to self-defense against perceived threats, while stressing the necessity for de-escalation through negotiations[1]. Recent events have shed light on the complexities of international alliances, and the fine line nations walk between protecting their allies and adhering to international norms[1][2].

The Commission, in response to the ongoing discussions, has also been asked to submit a proposal for a regulation on the protection of the environment. Meanwhile, politics and general news continue to evolve as Germans reevaluate their stance on international alliances, particularly regarding the conflict between Israel and Iran, with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius maintaining that Germany isn't involved, contrasting with Chancellor Friedrich Merz's statement about potential support.
