No indication of Moscow readying for a truce, according to Zelensky
The much-anticipated Russia-US summit took place on August 15, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska. The venue was Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson, and the focus of the meeting was the Russo-Ukrainian War[1][2][4].
The summit marked the first Russia-US summit since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. During the meeting, both leaders discussed ways to end the ongoing conflict[1]. However, the talks ended without any announced agreement or ceasefire[1][5].
Following the summit, Putin described the talks as "constructive and mutually respectful," but no concrete ceasefire deal was reached[5]. Trump suggested that the responsibility to end the war might require Ukraine to cede territory, implying a shift in the dynamics of peace prospects[1].
Prior to the summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin had stated that Russian forces were advancing on all fronts[3]. This assertion was met with concerns from Ukrainian intelligence, who reported that Russia was moving its forces in a way that suggested new offensive operations[6].
In the days leading up to the summit, Trump discussed the conversation with European leaders and Zelensky, with the latter noting that Russia seemed "more inclined towards a ceasefire"[7]. The meeting was two days after Putin's talks with US presidential envoy Steve Biegun in the Kremlin[8].
The head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), Kirill Dmitriyev, stated that the meeting of the presidents of Russia and the US will bring hope, peace, and global security[8]. However, Zelensky stated that Kyiv is ready for decisions that lead to peace, but "won't give away its land"[7].
Reports from The Wall Street Journal suggest that Putin presented Biegun with a "far-reaching proposal" for a ceasefire, involving territorial concessions by Kyiv and international recognition of lost territories in exchange for a truce[9]. Trump has expressed his desire to see a ceasefire and "a better" deal that can be made for both sides[1].
As the conflict continues, the prospects for a peaceful resolution remain uncertain. The Alaska 2025 summit has concluded, but the way forward for Ukraine and its relations with both Russia and the US remains to be seen.
