'No hopes for peace': Ukrainian soldiers cast aside peace prospects as Trump's deadline approaches
The peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine remain uncertain and tense, with Russia continuing to advance militarily on the ground in eastern Ukraine. U.S. President Donald Trump is engaging with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a summit scheduled in Alaska, aiming to assess within minutes if a deal to halt the war is possible.
Trump’s efforts are focused on facilitating negotiations that might include returning some Ukrainian territories to Russia. This point has caused concern and opposition from Ukraine and European leaders who insist that Ukraine’s borders must not be changed by force and that Ukraine should be involved in any talks. Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, has firmly rejected any territorial concessions, calling Russia’s conditions an attempt to partition Ukraine.
Putin appears to seek locking in gains from his invasion and to gain sanctions relief, while also possibly using the talks to negotiate arms control issues with the U.S. There are indications Putin might reduce territorial claims to just the Donetsk region, reflecting some response to recent U.S. sanctions, though the details remain unclear and disputed. The absence of Ukraine’s direct participation in the Trump-Putin discussions is viewed critically by Western leaders as problematic for the legitimacy and fairness of any agreement.
Ukrainian forces are engaged in intense battles along a 1,000-kilometer front line from northeast to southeast Ukraine, including the Pokrovsk area of the eastern Donetsk region where heavy fighting is taking place as Russia attempts to advance into the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region. Ukrainian forces are also engaging in intense fighting in the northern Sumy border region to prevent reinforcements from being sent to Donetsk.
Meanwhile, Putin had phone conversations with leaders of South Africa, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. He also hopes to meet with Trump as early as next week, possibly in the United Arab Emirates. However, Trump's efforts to pressure Putin into stopping the fighting have so far delivered no progress. It is unclear what steps Trump intends to take on Friday in regards to imposing additional sanctions on Russia and introducing secondary tariffs targeting countries that buy Russian oil.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping also expressed support for a long-term settlement of the Ukrainian crisis during a phone call with Putin. The outcome of the Trump-Putin summit scheduled for August 15, 2025, will be closely watched to see if any substantive progress toward peace can be made.
