Title: No Immediate Rescue Helicopter Plans for Saxony-Anhalt, but Experts See Potential for Improvement
Despite the expansion of the A14 and expert suggestions, acquiring an additional rescue helicopter for Saxony-Anhalt's northern region isn't currently on the agenda, as mandated by health insurance companies needing a specialized report. This stance was confirmed by the Ministry of the Interior, which suggested an evaluation of the region's rescue services was warranted.
In late April, Magdeburg presented a report on the future hospital landscape, commissioned by the state government. One recommendation was to investigate if an additional helicopter in the north could drastically enhance healthcare services, particularly in handling serious and time-sensitive conditions. Special focus was drawn to cardiology and stroke care, which experts project as experiencing insufficient resources and infrastructure.
Health insurance providers, such as the Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds, cited the region's existing air rescue locations in Brandenburg, Perleberg, Uelzen, and Wolfenbüttel as providing near-comprehensive coverage for the population—with 97 to 100% of residents reaching aid within 15 minutes. Still, the SPD parliamentary group called for further dialogue, questioning the implications of other regions reducing their helicopter resources.
With current rescue operations serviced by three helicopters – one each in Magdeburg and Landsberg for emergencies, as well as an additional Landsberg-based helicopter for transfers – a potential restructuring may be in the near future. The air rescue licenses for these assets expire by year's end, with contract approval periods shortened from six to three years. During this duration, both AOK Saxony-Anhalt and IKK will examine the necessity of reorganizing the existing air rescue locations.
The Association of Substitute Health Insurance Funds, comprised of health providers like Techniker Krankenkasse and Barmer, supports the existing services' adequacy and advocates against unnecessary expansion. However, the SPD parliamentary group believes that comprehensive forecasting and consideration are crucial, as they believe rescuing patients from other countries could become challenging if resources are scant.
