In Yakutia, a region known for its harsh winters and expansive forests, the summer months bring a different challenge - wildfires. Andrei Konoplev, Deputy Minister of Ecology, Natural Resources, and Forestry, has reported on the ongoing efforts to combat these fires.

As of mid-August 2025, Yakutia is experiencing a high fire hazard with multiple active forest fires. On August 6, there were about 18 ongoing fires covering around 76.8 thousand hectares, with 5.54 thousand hectares extinguished over the previous day. Approximately 10 active fires were in a control zone covering 61 thousand hectares, with nearly 300 people involved in firefighting efforts.

By August 20, the fire hazard class was officially classified as high in several districts, with the burning forest area exceeding 1.1 thousand hectares at that time. Comparing to the current date (August 21, 2025) and information from last year, no specific data for August 21, 2024, was found. However, reports indicate that wildfires remain a recurring problem in Yakutia, often reaching severe levels during the summer months and necessitating ongoing firefighting operations.

The scale of the fires in 2025 appears significant, with several tens of thousands of hectares affected, indicating a serious fire season. A total of 507 natural fires have been extinguished this season, covering a total area of 191,348.84 hectares. Of these, 310 forest fires have been successfully put out, covering a total area of 159,890.8 hectares.

To report natural fires, residents can call the single forest protection number 8-800-100-94-00. Alternatively, they can contact the regional forestry service dispatch center at 7-4112-44-74-76. By decree of the Head of Yakutia, a special fire prevention regime has been established throughout the republic since June 5, 2025.

In addition, special fire prevention regimes have been implemented in the Verkhoyansk, Olekminsky, Churapchinsky, and Eveno-Bytantaysky districts, as well as in the village of Zhatai. As of August 12th, 2023, there are no active fires in the republic.

Despite these efforts, 73 individuals have been identified as responsible for natural fires this season. A total of 150 protocols have been issued for violations of forest fire safety rules.

In conclusion, Yakutia continues to battle wildfires in 2025, with over 150,000 hectares affected. The ongoing efforts to combat these fires, along with the special fire prevention regimes in place, demonstrate a commitment to protecting the region's forests and ecosystems. However, the recurring nature of these wildfires underscores the need for continued vigilance and proactive measures to prevent and control them.
