NMSU Names Joe Fields as New Athletic Director

New Mexico State University (NMSU) has appointed Joe Fields as its new Athletic Director. Fields, who previously served as Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Tulsa, was selected from a pool of four finalists for the news today role.

Fields, 39, brings two decades of experience in college athletics to NMSU. He has worked his way up from various roles at Syracuse University and Texas A&M University, where he last served as Deputy Athletic Director. His hire comes nearly 10 months after the departure of former AD Mario Moccia.

A former football player at Syracuse, Fields earned All-Big East Conference honors at safety. He also spent time with the NFL's Carolina Panthers. Fields holds a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's degree in instructional design, development, and evaluation from Syracuse. He has been serving as Deputy Athletic Director and Chief Operating Officer at the University of Tulsa since August 2024.

Joe Fields will assume his new role as the 24th Athletic Director of NMSU on October 8, 2025. His extensive experience and background in college athletics are expected to bring valuable leadership to the university's athletic department.
