Nintendo Switch users can eagerly anticipate the release of "Emio - The Smiling Man" within Famicom Detective Club on August 29th.
In August 2024, the Famicom Detective Club series returns with a chilling new entry, Emio – The Smiling Man. This interactive drama serves as a sequel or continuation rather than a reboot, delving deep into the series' legacy by investigating a chilling case connected to an urban legend – the Smiling Man, a serial killer known for leaving a sinister smile on his victims.
The game's story revolves around a grisly murder of a high school student, Eisuke Sasaki. His body is found with a paper bag on his head, featuring an eerie smiling face, echoing unsolved murders from 18 years ago linked to the Smiling Man myth. Players, as part of the Utsugi detective agency, must unravel whether these killings are the work of the original Smiling Man or a copycat.
The Smiling Man urban legend is deeply integrated into the game's central mystery and thematic framework. The Smiling Man is depicted as a terrifying figure whose victims are forced to wear a permanent "smile," aligning with common themes of unsettling urban legends involving eerie, iconic killers. The game blurs lines between legend and reality to create suspense and horror, making the Smiling Man both a narrative centerpiece and a symbol of unresolved past crimes within the game's universe.
Emio – The Smiling Man is produced by Yoshio Sakamoto, who was involved in the plot foundations to the small details of the script and cutscenes. More information about the game can be found on its official website, and pre-ordering options are available. The game is set to launch on the Nintendo SwitchTM system on Aug 29.
