Ninety-nineers sans their leader:
Niners Chemnitz Prepare for a New Era in the 2025-2026 BBL Season
After a significant summer of changes, the Niners Chemnitz are gearing up for the start of the new Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) season at the end of September. The team, known for being an attractive platform for rising players and their EuroCup participation, is entering the new campaign with a completely revamped roster.
Key departures include captain Jonas Richter, who retired due to health reasons at the age of 28, and fan favourite DeAndre Lansdowne, who is moving to the Rostock Seawolves. To fill these gaps, the Niners have recruited players such as Canadian point guard Kaza Kajami-Keane, who returns to the club after a year in Serbia, and Kostja Mushidi, who joins the team after almost three years in Weißenfels and eight months with the relegated Göttingen.
In addition to new arrivals, the Niners are also retaining key players like Kevin Yebo, who has extended his contract with the club, marking a clear commitment to the team. Yebo, the power forward, has revealed that the team's season goal will not be to settle for mid-table. Instead, they aim to be more defensively stable and experience less ups and downs.
The Niners' first game of the season will be against vice-champion ratiopharm Ulm on September 28. Before that, the team kicked off training on Wednesday with ten new players, as they look to restructure their roster and develop younger talent or recruit new players to remain competitive in the BBL.
While the team has not yet released any official statements detailing their strategies for the upcoming season, it is reasonable to infer that they may focus on adjusting tactics to match the new player skill sets, possibly exploring different playing styles or roles. However, for precise updates, monitoring official team communications such as press releases or their website would be necessary closer to or during the season.
In other news, the Niners and Science City Jena will play away in the BBL Cup. Meanwhile, defending champion MBC Syntainics could face a rematch of the final against Bamberg in the BBL Cup quarter-finals.
