Title: Young Blood in Politics: 19-Year-Old Tim Sieper Takes the Reigns as Germany's Youngest Mayor
The quaint square before the town hall in Eckenroth is clean and well-kept, the hedges freshly trimmed, the playground equipment marked with "structural defects." Mayor Tim Sieper, the village's youngest leader, stands there discussing plans to fix it all. He's been in charge for a few weeks now, and the next town council meeting will be his first in command.
At just 19, Sieper broke records as Germany's youngest mayor, a title previously held by Caroline Candels, also 19, from Roscheid. After Sieper's father, Michael Sieper, had to resign due to health issues, Eckenroth was left without a mayor. That's when young Sieper stepped up and threw his hat in the ring.
"If an older, more experienced candidate had shown up, I'd have forfeited my position without hesitation," Sieper explains today, discussing his candidacy. "But since none appeared, I figured I'd take a crack at it." In early May, he was elected in the council meeting, with 4 out of 6 votes cast in his favor. The two opposing votes barely fazed him: "Of course, it's frustrating when the winds aren't always in your favor. Those are people I now have something to prove to."
Sieper completed his Abitur in nearby Bad Kreuznach earlier this year and has no intention of running for the town council at the moment. Instead, he'll be enrolling in a dual study program to become a sports and movement therapist in the same city this fall. His days are divided between a nightshift at a regional bakery chain and his duties as mayor once his shift ends.
Hailing from the Langenlonsheim-Stromberg Verbandsgemeinde, Sieper had previously gained political experience in the youth council. "This is fantastic for us, as it sends a clear message: young people can get involved too," says Michael Cyfka (CDU), the mayor of Langenlonsheim-Stromberg. Cyfka believes that Sieper's commitment serves as proof that young people have a genuine interest in local politics, contrary to popular belief.
When it comes to national politics, Sieper maintains that it's less relevant to Eckenroth and that his focus is purely local. "Whatever happens at the national level doesn't really affect our town if I can't make a difference," he explains. Sieper is not tied to any political party and is more interested in addressing the needs of his hometown head-on.
On the subject of age and experience, Sieper is unbothered. "I've learned to navigate bureaucratic jargon over the years, and if I don't understand something, I can always ask my father," he says reassuringly. Cyfka also believes that Sieper will make an excellent mayor: "He's level-headed and sensible; he'll learn on the job."
Sieper's advice to young people interested in local politics is simple: "Give it a shot. If you're of age, find out if there's a youth council in your community. If not, run for the city council. You never know, you might just find yourself 'over your head' in a good way!"
As the sun sets, Sieper heads home, but the story doesn't end there. A fire alarm goes off in Eckenroth about 20 minutes later. Known for his roots in the community, Sieper makes his way to the fire station as one of the first responders, embodying his commitment to serving his people.
