Nine Inch Nails recently performed with drummer Josh Freese in their initial return to the stage.
In an unexpected turn of events, Ilan Rubin, known for his dynamic performances, has swapped places with Josh Freese, becoming the new drummer for Foo Fighters and rejoining Nine Inch Nails respectively.
Rubin, who gained fame for his work with Nine Inch Nails, steps into the shoes left vacant by the passing of Taylor Hawkins in 2022. Simultaneously, Freese returns to Nine Inch Nails, a band he was a part of from 2005 to 2008, contributing to albums like Year Zero and The Slip.
Ilan Rubin, the youngest living musician inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at the age of 32, brings his distinctive style to the Foo Fighters. His transition, however, leaves the nature of his role unclear, whether it is a permanent position or just for touring purposes.
As for Freese, his return to Nine Inch Nails marks a reunion with the band after a decade-long hiatus. The North American leg of the Peel It Back tour, which resumed last week at the Oakland Arena on August 6, saw Freese back on the drums for the band.
During the Oakland shows, Nine Inch Nails performed a mix of heavier hits at the main stage and acoustic versions and remixes at a smaller second stage. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross performed acoustic versions of several tracks, including Right Where It Belongs, Somewhat Damaged, Ruiner, and Piggy, on the second stage. Boys Noize joined the band on the smaller stage for performances of Vessel, Sin, Came Back Haunted, and the live debut of As Alive As You Need Me To Be.
The tour will continue in Seattle on August 12 and conclude at the Inglewood Kia Forum on September 19. For ticket details, visit the NIN Peel It Back tour website.
Meanwhile, the Foo Fighters continue their journey with Ilan Rubin behind the drums. The exact nature of Rubin's role remains to be seen, but fans are eagerly anticipating the new dynamics he will bring to the band.
