Ecuador is grappling with a surge in organized crime and violence, particularly in its coastal provinces, which have become hotspots of intense gang activity. The country has seen a dramatic increase in homicides, with the 2025 homicide rate reaching 38 per 100,000 people—up from 6 per 100,000 in 2018.

The coastal provinces, including Guayas and Los Ríos, are among the most affected regions, accounting for nearly 80% of the violence concentrated around key drug trafficking routes and ports. Gangs such as Los Choneros and Los Lobos are fighting for control over cocaine trafficking routes, exploiting Ecuador’s strategic location and vulnerability due to corruption in some authorities.

The violence has escalated to gruesome levels, with recent incidents including a pool hall shooting where seven people were killed in Santo Domingo and multiple massacres killing more than a dozen people in Guayas province just in mid-2025. The gangs’ presence has also expanded geographically beyond coastal provinces to over 150 municipalities nationwide, including Andean and Amazonian provinces.

The government, under President Daniel Noboa, has declared a war on organized crime and imposed repeated states of emergency in the most violent areas. However, efforts to reduce the violence have been unsuccessful, despite large-scale operations.

In a tragic turn of events, two days prior, gunmen attacked a boat near El Oro province, resulting in four fatalities and several missing individuals. The victims were between 20 and 40 years old. This incident is just one of many that have occurred in the region.

Last year, nearly 7,000 killings were reported, a decrease from over 8,000 in 2023. However, this year, the number of killings has risen, with more than 4,600 people having been killed so far.

Authorities attribute the recent wave of violence in Ecuador to disputes among organized crime groups linked to transnational drug cartels. These crime groups have expanded their operations, particularly in the Pacific region, where drugs are shipped from to Central America, the United States, and Europe.

In a shocking incident, a shooting occurred at a nightclub in the rural area of Santa Lucía, Guayas, Ecuador, on Sunday. Seven of the victims died at the club, and one died at a hospital. The shooting resulted in eight fatalities and three injuries. It is unclear what prompted the shooting.

Ecuador's coastal provinces of El Oro, Guayas, Manabí, and Los Ríos are currently under a state of emergency due to recent violence. The government is working to combat this issue, with international cooperation efforts such as a joint police and migration cooperation center launched with Peru aimed at combating transnational organized crime and drug trafficking through shared intelligence and coordinated action.
