Nigerian Governor Wike Disputes ADC Coalition's Influence Over Nigerians
In a recent interview on Channels Television's 'Politics Today', Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, shed light on his understanding of political coalitions in Nigeria.
Wike asserted that a coalition is a strategic alliance among political communities or parties, formed to serve their respective interests, particularly in the context of presidential elections and power sharing. He emphasized that coalitions are arrangements where different political factions or regions come together to support common goals, often with an eye on future election timelines and power rotation agreements.
The Minister, however, questioned the claim that Nigerians are looking up to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), based on the results of the recent by-elections. He asserted that the ADC is not a coalition, comparing it to the merger of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014.
Wike went on to say that coalition members should present their track records to the public, not just make promises. He stated that the outcome of the recently conducted by-elections in 13 states across the country shows that Nigerians are not looking up to the ADC.
It's important to note that Wike's statement does not mention any specific individuals other than himself, nor does it discuss any disagreements or conflicts, corruption allegations, upcoming events, local contractors, or issues related to contracts.
This perspective from Wike frames a political coalition as a calculated partnership among political groups to maximize their influence and electoral success within Nigeria’s multi-ethnic, multi-regional political environment. His commentary on coalition dynamics around presidential tickets in Nigeria underscores the importance of balancing regional expectations, term limits, and historical political trust or distrust in these alliances.
