Nigeria strengthens data security in landmark telecom compliance talks

A high-level meeting took place between the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) and EMTS, a major telecom operator, to strengthen data security in the country. The discussions centred on compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDP Act), as well as broader efforts to improve cybersecurity and digital trust.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, welcomed Mr. Obafemi Banigbe, CEO of EMTS, for talks on data protection challenges. The meeting highlighted EMTS’s proactive steps, including the deployment of advanced cybersecurity tools and the integration of data protection into its business operations.

The meeting reinforced the importance of compliance with the NDP Act and joint efforts to enhance cybersecurity. EMTS’s initiatives, including local cloud development and staff training, will support Nigeria’s broader data protection goals. Both sides committed to continued cooperation in strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
