Niemann clinches victory at LIV Mexico City, guaranteeing spot at US Open tournament
Chilean Joaquin Niemann Wins Big at LIV Golf Mexico City, Claims Top Spot in Individual Rankings
Stepping onto the winning podium at Club de Golf Chapultepec, the 26-year-old Chilean athlete, Joaquin Niemann, shone with a six-under 65 game—adding yet another title to his previous victories in Singapore and Adelaide.
With this impressive performance, Niemann ascended to the peak of the LIV Golf standings. In doing so, he secured his berth in the third major of the year. Notably, the United States Golf Association has granted the top-ranked player from the Saudi-backed series as of May 19, who isn't exempt, a spot in the tournament.
"I'm thrilled!" exclaimed Niemann, who had been on the brink of qualifying for the only 2025 major event for which he wasn't already qualified.
His team had urged him to sign up for the qualifiers, but Niemann preferred to avoid the prospect of playing 36 holes on a Monday after a tournament. "I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out," he said.
Starting the day two shots behind overnight leader Bryson DeChambeau, Niemann outmaneuvered his final-group partners DeChambeau and Australian Cameron Smith. Smith ended the tournament with a one-over final round, slipping to a tied eleventh position.
On the other hand, DeChambeau played an even-par final round, finishing tied for second with Australian Lucas Herbert, who set a course record with a 10-under par 61.
Spain's Jon Rahm ended the tournament four strokes behind Niemann, securing the fourth position. Despite starting the day five strokes behind the leading team, Ripper GC, Rahm's "Legion XIII" took the team title. They surpassed the previous leaders, Sergio Garcia's "Fireballs GC," atop the team standings, following their second win of 2025.
