Nicholas Brendon, Buffy's beloved Xander Harris, dies at 54 after years of struggle

Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54. His family confirmed he passed away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes on March 20, 2026. Beyond acting, he had recently turned to painting as a creative outlet.

Brendon first gained fame in the late 1990s as the witty, loyal friend in the cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. After the show ended in 2003, he went on to appear in programmes like Criminal Minds, Private Practice, and Kitchen Confidential, as well as films including Psycho Beach Party and Unholy.

His life, however, was marked by personal struggles. He openly discussed his battles with substance abuse and mental illness, even appearing on Dr. Phil to share his experiences. Legal troubles followed, with arrests and charges over the years. In 2023, he suffered a heart attack and was later diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and Cauda Equina syndrome.

Despite these challenges, Brendon found solace in art. In recent years, he developed a passion for painting, sharing his work with close friends and family. His twin brother, Kelly Donovan, survives him.

Originally, Brendon had dreamed of becoming a professional baseball player. Instead, he turned to acting partly to help manage a stutter. His family noted in their statement that he had shown a more positive outlook in his final months.

Brendon's death leaves behind a legacy of memorable performances and candid discussions about his struggles. His family remembered him for his creativity, resilience, and the joy he brought through his work. They have asked for privacy as they mourn his loss.
