Festival of Nibelungen: 'Till the World's End' - A Warning Call - Nibelungen Festival Echoes Apocalyptic Slogan: "World Burns"

Gritty, gravel-filled, and seething with controversy: Worms' Nibelungen Festival unveils its latest spectacle, "Ash Lake," a riveting three-hour drama that promises to be a double-edged, startlingly current production.

Under the visionary direction of Nico Hofmann, the rough-and-tumble play takes the stage from July 11 to 27 on the open-air stage in front of the Kaiser's Cathedral. Hofmann introduced the ensemble for this dynamic, thought-provoking game changer by Roland Schimmelpfennig in Worms. Unlike historical reenactments, Schimmelpfennig underscored, the production captures themes that resonate with modern audiences. He explained, "You don't wanna see knightly festivals."

This gravity-defying production delves into the epic "Nibelungenlied" saga in its entirety, from its humble beginnings to the shocking "end of the world." Thomas Laue, artistic director, shared his excitement, "We're presenting the entire arc until the world's end." Legendary actor Wolfram Koch ("Tatort") portrays the notorious Hagen, and Jasmin Tabatabai ("The Baader Meinhof Complex") steals the show as the powerful Queen Brunhild.

Overlord Antics

Violence, power struggles, and hard-hitting politics dominate the storyline, Schimmelpfennig revealed. "It's about overarching men who believe they can take whatever they want, whenever they want, without right or purpose." Intendant Hofmann agrees, asserting the play captures "the entire panorama of the present time." This year's spectacle is, without a doubt, "a very relevant production."

Director Mina Salehpour meticulously designed the unique setting, incorporating gravel from the Rhine and a water surface, as well as countless white plastic chairs. Koch, who plays Hagen, says each character remains in their contradictions. He explained, "This [performance] sacred songs that echo harshly in reality."

Festival benefactor Katharina Binz (Greens) hailed the cultural spectacle, calling the Nibelungen Festival a "beacon of culture" in the Rhineland-Palatinate state. She added, "We may not have the grand opera houses in Rhineland-Palatinate, but we have the best stories. One of them is the Nibelungen material."

The Nibelungenlied, with its themes of violence, ambition, and hubris, is one of Germany's most cherished sagas. But is this tragic tale destined to end in ruin and despair? The festival provides the answer each year in its fascinating productions.

Since its establishment in 2002, the festival has garnered critical acclaim and influenced audience opinion, setting the stage for imaginative adaptations of the classic story. Each year, a fresh interpretation of the epic is presented on-stage, yet only a few, like "Ash Lake," offer a comprehensive exploration of the saga's darker, more somber undertones.
