NHL's Michael Carcone champions Down syndrome awareness with young fan Welles Peterson

NHL player Michael Carcone has become a strong advocate for Down syndrome awareness after meeting Welles Peterson, a 12-year-old boy with the condition. Their friendship led to a special collaboration, including custom socks and a high-profile appearance at a Utah Mammoth game for World Down Syndrome Day this year.

Carcone first connected with the Peterson family last season. Welles, who has Down syndrome, taught him about the challenges and joys of living with the condition. Inspired by their bond, Carcone designed a pair of socks to honour World Down Syndrome Day, joining three other NHL players in the initiative.

The NHL, NHL Players' Association (NHLPA), and For Bare Feet organisation supported the project, donating $15,000 to the American Special Hockey Association. Last season, Carcone and Welles walked into a Utah Mammoth game together to mark the occasion. This year, Carcone returned with teammates Lawson Crouse and Alexander Kerfoot, escorting Welles and his friends onto the ice. Utah Mammoth head coach André Tourigny praised the players for their dedication to community engagement. The team's involvement aligns with their 'Community Obsessed' pillar, which focuses on local outreach. The Peterson family has also highlighted the importance of the event, noting how it raises awareness for Down syndrome on a broader scale.

Carcone's efforts have brought greater visibility to World Down Syndrome Day through sports. The partnership between players, the NHL, and local organisations has provided both financial support and public recognition. The initiative continues to grow, with more athletes joining the cause each year.
