NHL reviews A.J. Greer's controversial hit that injured Flames' Connor Zary
Florida Panthers forward A.J. Greer is facing potential disciplinary action after a controversial hit during Friday's game. The incident involved Calgary Flames player Connor Zary, who left the match with an undisclosed injury. The NHL's Department of Player Safety has scheduled a hearing for Sunday to review the play.
The collision took place at 11:14 of the third period in Calgary, where the Panthers lost 4-1. Greer received multiple penalties on the play: a five-minute major for interference, a two-minute minor for hooking, and a 10-minute game misconduct. Officials flagged the hit as possible boarding, which prompted the league's review.
Zary has a history with injuries from a similar incident. In October 2023, during a preseason game against Seattle, he suffered a broken clavicle that required surgery. After recovering by January 2024, he returned to full form and has since become a consistent performer for the Flames. As of March 2026, he has played over 200 NHL games, scoring more than 50 goals without further setbacks.
The Department of Player Safety will assess the hit for potential supplemental discipline. Greer's hearing on Sunday will determine whether further penalties, such as a suspension or fine, will follow. Zary's condition remains under observation after leaving Friday's game early.
