In the heart of Fort Lauderdale, Aleksander Barkov, the head honcho of the Florida Panthers, found himself in for a shocking turn of events during an apparently ordinary team gathering. The coaches had seemed oblivious to the players' fatigue, prompting Barkov's curiosity.

It turned out there was a double secret waiting in the wings — two good reasons worth keeping hidden.

Amidst the playoff series, the Florida Panthers had missed out on spending quality time with the little warriors from the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital. So, they hatched a plan to give a grand tour of their training facility to these brave kids. These children weren't bearing gifts of mere drawings or photographs of Barkov, however; they had something far more valuable in store.

"I reckoned a few pics or doodles of me, I thought," Barkov mused.

With the Panthers' meeting room transformed into a theater-style seating arrangement, Barkov leapt over the last row, eager to greet the children. But his surprise quadrupled when the gifts were revealed: none other than the King-Clancy trophy, honoring exceptional leadership on and off the ice, and the Selke trophy, bestowed upon the best defensive forward in the NHL.

Technically, the NHL had awarded the trophies to Barkov a week prior, with the official announcement made public on Monday. This recognition marked Barkov's third Selke and his inaugural King-Clancy victory.

"It's bloody fantastic," Barkov told the Associated Press, his voice thick with emotion. "It took me aback. I didn't have the words. It was brilliantly done, and I'm truly grateful."

The NHL has swapped up its trophy announcement tactics this year, adding an element of surprise and secrecy, as only a select few knew in advance. With cameras and microphones tucked away in the meeting room by the NHL and TNT network, an inkling that something out of the ordinary was afoot may have been evident, yet head coach Paul Maurice and general manager Bill Zito executed it with panache.

A young boy took the stage for a brief moment and requested, "Could the gift please be brought in?" Seconds later, an NHL rep marched in with the King-Clancy trophy.

"Thanks to you all," Barkov said, cradling the King-Clancy, addressing the gathered children and families. "I didn't foresee this. I'm a bit choked up now, but it means the world, and, of course, you... well, I'm emotional, but I love your presence."

Before the tears could fully well up, another door creaked open. More kids entered, this time bearing the Selke trophy.

"Another speech?" Barkov joked, still clutching the King-Clancy as his teammates cheered. "Thank you, thank you very much. I couldn't have done it without you. I adore you, and we've still got work to do."

Preparing to battle it out in the Stanley Cup Final for the third year in a row, the Panthers will be gracing the ice for another round against the Oilers in Edmonton. The children from the Joe DiMaggio Hospital will be among the spectators, a privilege Barkov considers a treasure.

"I'm more than pleased to lend a hand in any way I can," Barkov concluded.

The tally of the Selke Trophy vote:

  1. Aleksander Barkov, Florida: 1363 points
  2. Sam Reinhart, Florida: 837
  3. Anthony Cirelli, Tampa: 828
  4. Nico Hischier, New Jersey: 477
  5. Nick Suzuki, Montreal: 28
