NHAI’s unified GIS portal transforms India’s highways with digital precision
NHAI has integrated its operations with a unified GIS portal, enhancing accountability and documentation. The National Highway network is now fully mapped, supporting better alignment planning and faster clearances. Meanwhile, FASTag Annual Pass has seen over 25 lakh adopters, reducing transaction friction. NPCI's NETC program has achieved 98% FASTag penetration with over 8 crore users.
NHAI One integrates five core areas of NHAI's project operations, enhancing accountability and accurate documentation of on-site progress and compliance. The National Highway network of 1.46 lakh km is fully mapped on a unified GIS portal with 550+ data layers, supporting better alignment planning, faster clearances, reduced duplication, and integrated multimodal connectivity.
The Rajmargyatra app serves as a digital travel companion, offering details about highways, toll plazas, nearby amenities, and live weather updates. Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) are being implemented to reduce road accidents, minimize traffic violations, and accelerate emergency response times. India's highways are being redefined from physical corridors to digital-cognitive systems, with a focus on building smart, data-driven, resilient, and sustainable corridors aligned with the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti.
In 2023-24 and 2024-25, NHAI planted over 1.23 crore saplings and revived 467 water bodies, generating 2.4 crore m3 soil and saving ₹16,690 crore, promoting green highways and sustainable construction. India's first Moving Lane Free Tolling (MLFF) system was launched at Choryasi, Gujarat, using ANPR cameras, RFID, and back-end verification, reducing queueing delays by 50-70% and major CO2 savings.
NHAI's digital initiatives, such as NHAI One and the GIS portal, have improved operational efficiency and planning. The widespread adoption of FASTag and NPCI's NETC program has streamlined toll payments. Environmental conservation efforts, like tree planting and water body revival, have not only promoted green highways but also resulted in significant cost savings.
