NFL's Performance-Based Pay Hands Nahshon Wright a Record $1.4M Bonus
Nahshon Wright, a former Chicago Bears defensive back, earned the highest bonus in the NFL's performance-based pay program for the 2025 season. His payout exceeded $1.4 million, more than doubling his previous year's salary. The scheme rewards lower-paid players who see significant time on the field, offering them extra income based on their contributions.
The NFL's performance-based pay program has distributed nearly $3.3 billion to players since its launch in 2002. By the end of the 2025 season, that figure is set to climb to almost $4 billion. Over 1,200 players have now received at least $1 million each through the initiative.
In 2025 alone, the program allocated over $542 million in bonuses. The top 25 earners each took home more than $1 million, a sharp rise from just five players exceeding that mark in 2024. The top 10 bonuses ranged from $1.15 million to $1.3 million. Wright's standout 2025 season included five interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles. His performance earned him his first Pro Bowl selection. The previous year, he had been paid $1.1 million by the Bears, making the bonus a major financial boost. The program specifically targets players with lower base salaries who feature heavily in games. It excludes the league's highest earners, ensuring the rewards go to those who contribute significantly but earn less.
Wright's bonus more than doubled his 2025 earnings, highlighting how the program supports players who perform well despite modest salaries. With payouts increasing each year, more athletes are benefiting from the scheme's financial rewards. The 2025 season saw a record number of players receiving over $1 million in extra pay.
