NFL's New Kickoff Rules Face Trump's Criticism

The NFL has implemented new kickoff rules this season, aiming to boost returns and enhance player safety. However, these changes have sparked criticism from former President Donald Trump, who believes they detract from the game's spectacle.

The NFL's latest kickoff rules, introduced this year, are part of a series of changes aimed at reducing injury risk. Previously, in 2011, 2016, and 2018, rule alterations led to fewer collisions but also resulted in more touchbacks and fewer returns. This season, touchbacks were moved up to the 35-yard line, encouraging kicking teams to kick the ball just short of the end zone.

Last year, the NFL introduced dynamic kickoff rules to promote returns and reduce injury risk. However, these changes have not gone unnoticed by former President Donald Trump, who has criticized them on multiple occasions, including as recently as Sunday. Trump argues that the new rules remove pageantry and glamour from the game and do not significantly improve safety.

The NFL's new kickoff rules, designed to increase returns and enhance safety, have faced criticism from Donald Trump. Despite his concerns, the rules were made permanent this season following an experimental period in 2024. Trump has expressed hope that college football will not adopt similar changes.
