Falcons' New Kicker Shines in Debut, Romo Scores Five Field Goals in Victory

In an unexpected turn of events, the Atlanta Falcons signed John Parker Romo to their practice squad following a 44-yard field goal miss by Younghoe Koo in Week 1. This move came as Koo did not travel with the team for their Week 2 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Koo, who spent four seasons with the Falcons, was subsequently released by the team. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Koo expressed his gratitude towards the Falcons organization and fans.

Romo, an American professional football placekicker, had a brief stint with several NFL teams, including the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, Chicago Bears, and Minnesota Vikings, before joining the Falcons. He also played for the San Antonio Brahmas in the XFL, where he was an All-XFL team selection in 2023.

Romo made his debut for the Falcons in Week 2, starting ahead of Koo. In a performance that went viral, Romo converted all five of his field goal attempts, leading the Falcons to a 22-6 victory over the Vikings.

However, in a postgame interview conducted by NBC's Melissa Stark, Romo admitted that he barely knew his teammates' names after being called upon on short notice. This surprising revelation was met with comments from sports analysts, such as Mike Tirico, who expressed surprise that Romo did not know many of his teammates' names despite being in the league for 10 years.

Romo's longest field goal during the game was 54 yards, and he only recognized Atlanta's Pro Bowl running back Bijan by name during the interview.

Following the game, Romo was introduced to former No. 9 pick in the draft, Leonard Floyd. Romo's impressive performance in his debut has certainly raised expectations for his future performances with the Falcons.

It's worth noting that during the Falcons' training camp and preseason in 2025, Koo made 90.2% of his kicks. Despite this impressive record, the decision to release Koo and bring in Romo was likely influenced by the dip in Koo's field goal percentage to 73.5% in the 2024 season.

As the Falcons move forward, fans will be eager to see how Romo performs in future games and whether he can maintain his impressive form from his debut.
