NFL team, the Arizona Cardinals, have moved defensive back Garrett Williams and defensive lineman L.J. Collier to the injured reserve list.
The Arizona Cardinals have suffered a significant blow to their defensive unit, with starting cornerback Garrett Williams and backup defensive lineman L.J. Collier both being placed on injured reserve due to knee issues.
Williams, a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft from Syracuse, had been making a strong start to his rookie season. Prior to his injury, he had racked up 11 tackles and one pass deflection while starting both games this season for the Cardinals.
Collier, on the other hand, joined the Cardinals after being selected by Seattle in the first round (29th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft out of TCU. In his career, he has amassed 72 career tackles, 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 19 quarterback hits, and one forced fumble in 65 games (32 starts) for the Seahawks and Cardinals. This season, he has made one tackle while serving as a reserve in two games.
The injuries to Williams and Collier come at a crucial time for the Cardinals, as they are currently evaluating two cornerbacks, Will Johnson and Max Melton, "day to day" due to groin and knee issues respectively. Johnson did not practice on Wednesday, while Melton was limited.
In an effort to bolster their defensive depth, the Cardinals have made a couple of moves. They have promoted cornerback Darren Hall from the practice squad to the active roster, and signed cornerback Ekow Boye-Doe and defensive lineman Zach Carter to the practice squad.
However, the team has also released linebacker Elliott Brown from the practice squad.
Both Williams and Collier could potentially return to the Cardinals' roster this season, but they are required to miss at least the next four games. The Cardinals will need to rely on their remaining defensive players to step up and fill the void left by their injured teammates.
