NFL team San Diego Chargers set to sidelined linebacker Khalil Mack (due to elbow injury) on Injured Reserve list, with anticipated comeback during this season.
Chargers Lose Star Linebacker Khalil Mack to Injury
The Los Angeles Chargers have suffered a significant blow as star linebacker Khalil Mack was forced to leave Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders due to a dislocated left elbow. The injury occurred on the final play of the first quarter, during a play where Mack's arm got stuck against teammate Troy Dye's body.
Mack, who has spent the last four seasons with the Chargers, was taken off the field after the injury and was ruled out during the two-minute warning of the first half. He was immediately placed on Injured Reserve, which means he will miss at least four weeks. Mack's left arm was heavily wrapped and he was wearing a sling after the incident.
Before joining the Chargers, Mack played four seasons with the Chicago Bears and four seasons with the Oakland Raiders. In the game against the Raiders, Mack recorded a sack on Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith in the opening quarter, his first of the season.
Coach Jim Harbaugh described Mack's injury as one of the toughest things he's ever seen. "Khalil is a warrior, and this injury is a tough pill to swallow," Harbaugh said. "But we have faith in our team and our depth. We'll rally around this and continue to fight."
In Mack's absence, Tuli Tuipulotu started as an edge rusher for the Chargers. Tuipulotu had a strong game, recording six quarterback pressures, a tackle for loss, and a pass breakup. Rookie Kyle Kennard and Caleb Murphy are listed as reserves on the team depth chart, and both players stepped up in Mack's absence.
Murphy, in particular, played the most snaps of his career, while Tuipulotu and Bud Dupree also played well. Dupree could start in Mack's place, as he has shown promise in previous games.
The Chargers will look to bounce back from this setback and continue their winning ways. They currently sit at the top of the AFC West division with a 6-2 record. Mack's career sack count now stands at 108.5, and the team will surely miss his presence on the field. But with a strong team effort, they hope to keep their playoff hopes alive.
