NFL rarity: Patriots players to link up with Ravens
In the 2025 NFL preseason, the New England Patriots have been experimenting with an unorthodox approach to protect their rookie quarterback, Drake Maye. The Patriots' offensive line strategy echoes that of the 2016 Baltimore Ravens, who started rookies at left guard and left tackle. However, the success of this approach is questionable, as the 2016 Ravens finished the season with an 8-8 record. If the Patriots decide to start rookies at both left guard and left tackle, they would be the first team since the 2016 Ravens to do so.
Despite the challenges, the players involved in the proposed offensive line setup, including rookies, seem confident in their ability to handle the challenge. Maye, who showed flashes of talent during his time as a starter, having been the number three overall pick in the previous spring, is also optimistic.
The Patriots' revamped offense, which includes a revitalised offensive line and an emerging wide receiving corps, will face challenges in the 2025 season. Having ranked near the bottom in scoring during 2024, the offensive line's performance will be pivotal for any offensive turnaround.
The New England Patriots began their 2025 regular season on September 7, and the success of their unorthodox approach to protecting Maye will be a key factor in determining their performance this season.
