NFL quarterback Ted Bridgewater expresses his displeasure at returning to professional football following his unexpected retirement at the age of 32
Former NFL Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater Returns to Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Aims for NFL Comeback
Teddy Bridgewater, the former NFL quarterback who retired from football just over 18 months ago, is back in the game, this time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team reached out to Bridgewater to join their quarterback room, and he accepted the opportunity.
Bridgewater's return to professional football comes as a surprise to many, as he had previously expressed a desire to coach high school football, specifically at Northwestern High, where he had coached the team to the Florida Class 3A title last winter. However, his coaching tenure was cut short due to a suspension from the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) over potential violations concerning impermissible benefits.
Despite the suspension, Bridgewater's intentions were to protect and support economically disadvantaged players, many from dangerous neighborhoods, by ensuring they had safe transportation and meals. He viewed coaching as a way to give kids a building block for the real world.
The FHSAA's investigation regarding Bridgewater's suspension is ongoing, but the suspension remains in effect, and Bridgewater has left the high school program as he looks to focus on his professional football career. Bridgewater received feelers during the offseason for NFL opportunities, but he declined until Northwestern's season was over.
Bridgewater isn't with the Buccaneers to be the starter, but rather a resource. Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles believes Bridgewater can help Baker Mayfield, and Bridgewater is eager to go out and show he can still 'spin it' in the NFL.
In the meantime, Bridgewater remains in contact with Lions coach Dan Campbell, and he might attend Northwestern games as a fan when the Buccaneers' schedule allows. He also still communicates regularly with his former Northwestern players, and he hopes to return one day as the coach of Northwestern High.
