NFL Quarterback Cam Newton guides the Carolina Panthers to secure a spot in Super Bowl 50 by overpowering the Arizona Cardinals.
In a dominating performance, the Carolina Panthers secured their spot in Super Bowl 50 with a resounding 49-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. The game, played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, saw the Panthers' defense put constant pressure on quarterback Carson Palmer, forcing him into six turnovers.
Cam Newton, the MVP candidate, led the offensive charge for the Panthers. He threw for 335 yards and two touchdowns, and added two more scores on the ground. Newton's touchdown passes included a 5-yard connection with rookie Devin Funchess in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game.
Newton also showcased his running ability, rushing for 47 yards and touchdowns of 1 and 12 yards. Jonathan Stewart contributed with 83 yards on 19 carries, while Luke Kuechly, the Panthers' linebacker, returned one of Palmer's interceptions 22 yards for a touchdown with 5:11 remaining in the game.
The Panthers' defense was instrumental in the early lead, forcing three first-half turnovers and six turnovers overall. Kurt Coleman, a Panthers safety, had two interceptions in the game. Arizona's offense, ranked second in the NFL, only managed to get going twice in the game.
Ted Ginn Jr., who played for the Cardinals last season, had a 22-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and a 32-yard punt return in the same period. Jerricho Cotchery, Johnson, and Palmer's three favorite targets - Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, and John Brown - combined for nine catches for 90 yards in the game.
Graham Gano contributed with two field goals, of 45 and 22 yards, in the NFC Championship Game. The Panthers ran for 152 rushing yards in the game, marking the 31st consecutive game (including playoff games) that they have ran for 100 or more yards.
Arizona's Patrick Peterson muffed a punt return in the second quarter, setting up Carolina's third touchdown of the half. The Panthers led the Cardinals 17-0 by the end of the first quarter and were up by 17 points at the half.
The Panthers will face the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. on FEB. 7. The quarterback for the Broncos in the Super Bowl was Peyton Manning, with Brock Osweiler as the backup and not playing in the postseason games, including the Super Bowl, during that season.
TV coverage for the Super Bowl will be on Ch. 2, and radio coverage will be on WFAN (660, 101.9). Let the countdown to Super Bowl 50 begin!
