NFL prospect Shedeur Sanders addresses the controversy surrounding him not being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens, while Cleveland Browns decide to release their current quarterback, facing critique for his performance.
Cleveland Browns' New QB Makes Debut in Tough Start to 2025 Season
The Cleveland Browns are off to a challenging start in the 2025 NFL draft season, currently sitting at 0-2. Their latest defeat came against the Baltimore Ravens, a team that former star quarterback Dillon Gabriel made his NFL debut for.
Gabriel, who spent his college years at Oregon, impressed in his debut, completing all three of his pass attempts for 19 yards and a touchdown. However, the Browns' struggles on offense were evident, with Joe Flacco looking lifeless on the field at M&T Bank Stadium, his former home.
Flacco has completed 56 out of 90 passes for 489 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions so far this season. Despite his performance, some, including former NFL quarterback Alex Smith and talkSPORT's Brian T. Smith, have called for the Browns to drop Flacco in favor of Gabriel.
The Browns' tough opening slate includes games against the new-look Green Bay Packers and the revitalized Detroit Lions, making it a difficult start for any quarterback. The team's first game of the season was against the Cincinnati Bengals, which they lost 16-17.
The Browns had initially intended to draft Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round. However, Sanders rejected the chance to be the backup quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens, who drafted him in 2025. Sanders' decision to forgo being drafted by the Ravens, who were looking for a backup to Lamar Jackson, may be a decision he lives to regret.
Sanders was drafted by the Browns shortly after, but his tenure with the team has been rocky so far. He led the team in their opening game against the Bengals, but the Browns were unable to secure a victory. Sanders was asked about reports of him snubbing the chance to play for the Ravens and focused on the present, stating that his focus is on helping the Browns win games.
Gabriel will have to impress the Browns' coaching staff enough to overtake Sanders on the depth chart to earn a starting opportunity. With the Browns' current record and tough schedule, it's clear that the team needs a spark on offense to turn their season around.
