In the 2025 NFL season, a new contender is emerging as the rookie trying to follow in the legendary footsteps of Deion Sanders. That contender is Derek Stingley Jr., the cornerback for the Houston Texans.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has compared Stingley's exceptional hands and overall skill set to those of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, calling him a unique and talented player who has developed into one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Ryans has highlighted Stingley's ball skills as being among the best he has seen since Sanders, underscoring the expectation that Stingley is set to live up to the legendary standards set by Sanders.

Stingley leads the NFL in passes defensed and has impressive interception numbers, demonstrating his impact similar to that of "Coach Prime" on defense.

Meanwhile, another player aiming to make a name for himself in the NFL is Shilo Stingley, a cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Shilo had an impressive preseason debut, leading the Bucs in snaps against the Tennessee Titans, registering zero receptions allowed, one tackle, and one quarterback hit.

Shilo's goal is to earn the coaches' trust, be physical, and make it on the field defensively one day. He believes there is room for improvement in his angles and tracking. Shilo had a strong performance in his preseason bow, throwing for 138 passing yards, adding 19 yards on the ground, and having two touchdowns.

Shilo's younger brother, Shedeur, also made his NFL debut this season, drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns. Shedeur is competing for playing time in the Browns' quarterback room.

Interestingly, Shilo gave his game-worn jersey to his mother instead of his Hall of Fame father. However, Shilo's father, Deion Sanders, expects more from his son. Deion, who revealed that he had beaten cancer in July, has expressed that he wants Shilo to achieve more on the field before he would accept a game-worn jersey.

Shilo played alongside his younger brother on the Colorado Buffaloes last season. His mother, Pilar, attended his game against the Tennessee Titans. Shilo aims to become an All-Pro special teams player.

In a remarkable act of generosity, Shilo used almost half of his rookie salary to purchase Apple watches for his former Colorado teammates.

As the NFL season unfolds, both Shilo and Derek Stingley Jr. are poised to make their mark and follow in the footsteps of Deion Sanders, one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history.
