NFI Group launches new Winnipeg facility to boost sustainable transit production

NFI Group Inc. and its subsidiary New Flyer have opened a new Customer Acceptance and Delivery (CAD) facility in Winnipeg. The site marks a major expansion for the company, boosting production of sustainable transit vehicles in Canada. Government officials, including Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and Premier Wab Kinew, attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week.

The new facility will increase New Flyer's production capacity by up to 240 equivalent units per year by 2027. Four new line entries are expected each week, helping meet growing demand for heavy-duty transit vehicles. For the first time in 15 years, Winnipeg will host full domestic production of these vehicles, including zero-emission buses.

NFI leads the electrification of mass mobility with a range of sustainable drive systems. These include zero-emission electric, natural gas, hybrid, and clean diesel options. The company delivered its first All-Canadian-built bus to Durham Transit in December 2025, showcasing the facility's early output.

The project follows significant investment from federal and provincial governments, alongside NFI's own funding. By 2027, the facility is projected to create around 500 direct jobs, strengthening the local supply chain. NFI's common shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol NFI.

The CAD facility reinforces NFI's role in sustainable transit while bringing hundreds of skilled jobs to Winnipeg. Full domestic production of heavy-duty vehicles, including zero-emission buses, resumes in the city after a 15-year gap. The expansion aligns with growing demand for cleaner public transport news.
