News Alteration: Merc has declined to compensate Navrotsky for damages
Polish President Karol Nawrocki's recent visit to Germany was marked by a contentious issue: the demand for post-war reparations. During the rule of the Law and Justice party, Nawrocki, who was then the government representative, demanded over a trillion euros in reparations from Germany. This demand, contrasting with previous governments like that of Donald Tusk, who considered the issue legally settled, remains unresolved politically.
During his talks with Chancellor Friedrich Merz and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Nawrocki reiterated his demands for reparations. However, both Merz and Steinmeier reaffirmed that the issue of World War II reparations has been long resolved. Merz declined Poland's demand, while Steinmeier offered a new approach: security guarantees for Warsaw instead of reparations.
Knut Abraham, Germany's representative for Polish affairs, made this recent offer of security guarantees. This new approach in the ongoing discussions between Poland and Germany comes as the joint security of the Baltic Sea region and the eastern flank of NATO remains a "key priority" for Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Nawrocki's repeated demands for reparations overshadowed his visit, with the issue casting a long shadow over the good neighborly relations between Poland and Germany. Merz, however, assured Nawrocki of Germany's full solidarity in the face of threats from Russia.
The issue of post-war reparations has consistently been rejected by Berlin. Merz restated this position, emphasising that Germany "firmly and steadfastly" supports Poland. Despite Nawrocki's persistence, it appears that the reparations dispute remains unresolved.
In early September, Nawrocki stated that resolving the reparations issue is necessary for good neighborly relations between Poland and Germany. However, it seems that finding a resolution may prove challenging, with the German government maintaining the position that the question is legally closed based on agreements after World War II.
